1. Impact A vulnerability in the Java Plug-in may allow an untrusted applet to elevate privileges through JavaScript calling into Java code. For example, an untrusted applet may grant itself permissions to read and write local files or execute local applications that are accessible to the user running the untrusted applet.

A second vulnerability may allow an untrusted applet to inappropriately interfere with another applet in the same web page which may include causing it to incorrectly load non-code resources such as files and web pages.

Sun acknowledges, with thanks, Fujitsu, for bringing these issues to our attention.

2. Contributing Factors The first issue can occur in the following releases:

SDK and JRE 1.4.2, 1.4.1_06 and earlier, all 1.4.0 releases, and 1.3.1_12 and earlier for Windows using the Internet Explorer browser

The second issue can occur in the following releases:

SDK and JRE 1.4.2_05 and earlier, all 1.4.1 and 1.4.0 releases, and 1.3.1_12 and earlier for Windows, Solaris and Linux

Note: JDK and JRE 5.0 are not affected by these vulnerabilities.

To determine the version of Java on a system, the following command can be run:

    % java -fullversion
    java full version "1.4.1_06-b01"

3. Symptoms There are no reliable symptoms that would indicate the described issues have been exploited.

4. Relief/Workaround JavaScript may be disabled in the browser as a temporary workaround for the first described issue.

5. Resolution The first issue is addressed in the following releases:

SDK and JRE 1.4.2_01 and later and 1.3.1_13 and later

The second issue is addressed in the following releases:

SDK and JRE 1.4.2_06 and later and 1.3.1_13 and later
