The vulnerability is caused due to an unspecified error in the snoop(1M) network utility related to displaying SMB traffic. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary commands as the "snoop" user when a specially crafted packet is captured or read via the "-i" option. Successful exploitation requires that "snoop" is used without the "-o" command line option. NOTE: If "snoop" is invoked as "root", the effective user is changed to "nobody". The vulnerability is reported in Solaris 8, 9, and 10 for both the SPARC and x86 platforms. SOLUTION: Apply patches. -- SPARC Platform -- Solaris 10: Apply patch 138083-01 Solaris 9: Apply patch 112915-05. Solaris 8: Apply patch 108964-11. OpenSolaris: Fixed in build snv_96 or later. -- x86 Platform -- Solaris 10: Apply patch 138084-01. Solaris 9: Apply patch 114262-04. Solaris 8: Apply patch 108965-11. OpenSolaris: Fixed in build snv_96 or later. PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: The vendor credits Gael Delalleau working with iDefense.
